Portrait:  The brawny and rugged Southern Gentlemen is capably structured and unquestionably sturdy.  Height:  16-25 inches.  Weight:  45-95 pounds.  The short coat comes in a variety of shades of yellows and fawns.  The irrefutably powerful muzzle is black, giving the cur his name.  The tail is left natural and can be quite lengthy.  A percentage of Foundation Black Mouth Curs can be born with stub tails or partial tails.  This dog's chest is deep and solid.

Development:  It is believed the Yellow Black Mouth originated in Texas somewhere around the early 19 th Century.  The Southern United States is well populated with cur type dogs that are used by local hunters and sportsmen. Boar, bear and coon are among the Black Mouth's quarry.  With medium-sized game, the Black Mouth catches and kills it (no questions asked).  It is also proficient at treeing and baying.

Character:  For the people who hunt, no other dog will do.  These are workmen's and professional hunter's dogs.  Male dogs are particularly manly, preferring the ladies for company and being especially protective of children.  Loyalty and fearlessness or the norm.  As with other hunting breeds, exercise is essential.
